Gloria showing students a Bardi grub With the kind help and support of Ms Gaylia Mitchem, Principle of Living Waters College, Halls Head Mandurah, Gloria and I facilitated design workshops with students from years 4, 5, 6 and 7. We discussed the environmental consequences of urban development and the value of the native flora and fauna in the area before the recent urban development. Gloria introduced the students to various traditional bush tucker including, much to the amazement of many students, live, wriggling, fat juicey Bardi grubs. The students developed some tremendous poems and a multitude of fantastic images that we subsequently combined into 6 interpretive plaques that were placed at various locations alongside the pedestrian pathways throughout the park. 2 major artworks were also developed with the themes of LAND and WATER. Cut-out images of local fish species and fauna were incorporated into aluminium plate (10mm) panels. The panel surface was treated with a scratching technique to refract the changing sun light and add a dynamic visual interest to the artworks. |
