Pundulmurra Aboriginal College - Sth Hedland - North / Western Australia ‘95

An 8 week residency project which resulted in the successful production of a diverse number of artworks with local artist Joyce Tullock.  Pundulmurra College is unique in providing students from throughout WA with access to accredited educational courses, specifically structured to accommodate the sensitivities of the Aboriginal Culture whilst rejoicing in the culture renaissance of the Australian Aboriginal People.  This project was challenging and rewarding because of the interesting dynamics created by the great mix of language and tribal/contemporary culture that the students brought to the college.  The intrinsic cultural diversity of the college determined the need for the artworks to reflect an aboriginality and sense of the place.  Additional to the fundamental premise was the incorporation of the notion of a universal essence of communication, one that was immediately identifiable and crossed cultural and political boundaries.  These photographs clearly show some of the dynamic and immensley successful images that resulted from the residency.  These artworks and more, now enhance the experience of Pundulmurra College for students, teachers and visitors.
