Jaisalmer Camel Safari Info

The travel agency we booked our camel safari out of Jaisalmer through was Ganesh Travels, their office is in the Fort. Walk down the narrow alley past the stairs up to the 8 July Restaurant and it's a bit further down on the left (write this in your book now). It cost R3200 including all food and a jeep trip to the start and from the end. This included the 4 of us for the 3 days and 2 nights, and I THINK the kids were half price? Ganesh were quite good, we had a great trip. However there was a bit of fibbing about where we'd go, the sand dunes on the second night weren't really sand dunes, and the start and end points weren't as far from Jaisalmer as he made out. But it didn't matter, it was still a great safari and experience. On this safari even the kids rode and handled their own camel, they don't have a tether between each camel like they do in Australia. We had a great experience, sleeping under the stars, eating Indian camp food, visiting village homes (photo) and even a desert wedding (photo). The camels didn't even have stirrups, and on the second day we trotted all day. That was hard, but SO MUCH fun. The guides were really nice guys, young guys too (photo). The camels were great too, well behaved.

It was not cold in Jaisalmer in Jan-Feb. At night in the hotel we were fine with hotel blankets, and during the day we walked around in summer clothes. At night in the desert on our safari it got quite cold though. But as we had our down sleeping bags from Nepal and the extra blankets the safari people gave us, we were fine. People who don't have sleeping bags often complain of being cold at night on the desert safaris, though.

There can be a bit of pressure from hotels in Jaisalmer to book a safari with them. We were going to be there when the Desert Festival was on (after the safari had ended), so we wanted to ensure we had a place to stay after the safari. So that's why we booked through Ganesh Travels, it was associated with our Uncle Guest House. We were never pressured, we did this off our own backs.

Jaisalmer is great too, it's well worth staying a few days to explore this desert fortress city. The Fort is wonderful, and lots of fun to stay in with its narrow, cobble-stoned streets and ancient buildings. Outside is some amazing architecture to explore down the narrow side streets too, especially the havalis. I also recommend the annual Desert Festival (in early Feb in 1998) if you are there at the right time like we happened to be. Sure its touristy, but lots of fun, and they really look after foreign tourists. The best part is the wonderful Indian music and dancing shows on each night, fantastic!
