Club Proud of Local Swimmers

Date: June 2003

Two members of the Mandurah Swimming Club, John Niessl and Lisande Dingjan represented their club at the recent Fisher & Paykel Australian Age Championships held in Brisbane.  Their coach Caroline Nilson accompanied the swimmers.

The club is justifiably proud of their efforts with Lisande consistent in her performances and finishing twenty-seventh overall in the female points score, involving all girls at the Championships. Lisande gained bronze medals in the 800 metres freestyle and as a member of the WA 14 yrs girls relay team. She narrowly missed bronze in the 13 yrs girls 100 metres freestyle by only 0.01 seconds. Lisande swam in the girls 13 and under age group.

John swam in the boys 16 years freestyle & backstroke events where his highest placing was 15th in the boys’ 16 years 200m backstroke. All were fantastic efforts by both swimmers, against the best young swimmers in Australia.

John & Lisande both hold a number of WA country swimming records for freestyle, backstroke & IM events, both swimmers breaking multiple WA country records since the beginning of 2003.

At the recent Australian Championships Lisande re-broke 30 of her own records, and since January of 2003, at the age of only 13 years, she is the fastest female swimmer of any age ever from country WA. She is also ranked number one in WA for her 13 yrs age group in freestyle events and the 200 metres IM.

John Niessl is WA’s fastest ever country swimmer in freestyle events from 50 to 200 metres, and in backstroke over 50 and 100 metres. He re-broke a number of his own records in March 2003 to achieve these new records.

The total medal haul for the WA team was 65 medals, with the strong City of Perth Swimming Club being crowned the premier Australian Swimming Club. The 2004 Australian Age Championships will be held at Challenge Stadium next April 14th to 18th.

The Mandurah Swimming Club has commenced training for the winter season after a very successful 2002/03-summer season in which the club won every major WA country swimming team award available. Mandurah Swimming Club is looking to continue this success in the 2003 coming year and have been heartened by the influx of a number of talented new swimmers to the club in the early part of the new season.

The Mandurah Swimming Club is fortunate in having the current stars of country swimming and with several other talented WA state titleholders and medallists in the club, we are confident of another very successful year.
