After crashing through the road block the getaway car containing John Fawster and Nick Ballen was heading towards Watson Bay.
"Forget about the others, we've got our half of the money. Let's just head towards Watson Bay," demanded Nick.
"Okay, we'll go your way," answered John.
Nick's face looked very worried because of the cops who were hot on their tail. Every few
seconds he would look over his shoulder to see if the cops were getting any closer. He had a short temper and whenever something went wrong he would get angry at anyone who looked at him the wrong way.
John was more cool. He was looking forward to dumping Nick when he got to the next city. He thought Nick was a lunatic and couldn't handle him any more. In the past Nick had shot people for no good reason and every time they were robbing a bank or stealing a car he would go crazy if someone saw him and could identify him to the cops.
The cops knew the identity of John Fawster, because one of the witnesses saw him, when he dropped his mask at the R & I Bank. John Fawster wasn't too worried about being recognized because he thought that it was too quick for someone to recognize him when he dropped his mask.
Meanwhile the police were trying to keep on the trail. The road was extremely narrow and had pot holes, so it was hard for the cops to keep up with the 140km per hour speed of the red sports car in front of them, but the three cop cars still managed to stay with them.
The tread on John Fawster's car tyres was burning up and it was becoming harder for John
Fawster, the driver, to turn corners. They were 25 kilometres away from the city.
The head officer, Ralph Delrocca, said to his partner, " We need to get them before they
approach the city because they could get people hurt."
Jason Donald, his partner, replied, " The road is too straight to catch him and he has a faster car. The chances are we will catch him in the city, if we catch him at all."
"That may not be necessary. I will call a chopper to track him so if it gets dark we can still follow him. I will also ask for road blocks at Wilson Street and at Pilmar Avenue."
A radio message came on and told Ralph that they had already set up road blocks at Wilson and Pilmar Avenue.
"The chopper has finally arrived," said Ralph.
"Just as well. It's dark now," said Jason.
Meanwhile John and Nick started to panic. They saw the chopper in the sky.
Nick said, " What will we do now?"
"I'm not too sure myself. I think we'll just go through the city and keep heading north to Texas," sighed John.
As they approached Kanabar they saw the road block and found themselves trapped for sure this time. There was no escape the chopper was on to them, three cop cars behind them and they were heading for a road block.
Ralph and Jason's car had been battered and bashed because of John's crazy driving. This
happened when Jason tried to pull out in front of him, but was rammed by the robbers' car and the car scraped against the railing on the side of the road. So they decided not to try to get in front of him again. Instead they stayed behind him and waited until he hit the road block.
The two cops inside the chopper had an eye on them ever since they were called upon by the cars in pursuit at 5.30 p.m. They had easily followed the red sports car because they could see the other police cars around the get-away car.
Now after all this time that had finally trapped them. Six cars and police with shotguns aimed at them. The cars were facing sideways and the get-away car couldn't get around because of the barricade.
John and Nick saw the police cars lined up in front of them. Nick turned to John frustrated and shouted, " What now? Another of your brilliant plans gone wrong."
"Shut up it's not my fault. I'd like to see you try and make the perfect plan."
Nick didn't say anything.
The car came to a halt twenty metres from the road block. The cops yelled out, "Step out of the car with your hands up." Both of them got out.
John and Nick were sentenced to 30 years in prison. As for the other two members of the gang they were never found.
